Introduction to Amlogic TV Box and Smart TV Chips

Shenzhen, China, 24 June 2025 ---- Amlogic is a company that makes chips (SoCs) for smart TVs and TV boxes. These chips are popular because they offer good performance at a low cost. Many Android TV devices and streaming boxes use Amlogic chips. In this article, we will introduce four common models: S905D, S905L, S905X4, and S905X5. Each of these chips is designed for different types of devices, from simple streaming boxes to smart TVs with AI features.

S905D: A Chip for Live TV and Streaming

The S905D is a chip that is made for devices that need both live TV and streaming video. It has a 4-core ARM Cortex-A53 CPU and a Mali-450 MP3 GPU. It can handle 4K video at 60 frames per second and supports video formats like H.265 and VP9. The S905D also supports digital TV tuners, so it can be used in devices that receive DVB-T, DVB-T2, or DVB-S2 signals. It also supports basic HDR10 for better color and contrast. This chip is often used in hybrid TV boxes that combine live TV channels and internet apps in one device.

S905L: A Simple and Cheap Chip for Streaming

The S905L is a more basic chip that is designed for low-cost streaming devices. Like the S905D, it has a 4-core ARM Cortex-A53 CPU and a Mali-450 MP3 GPU. It can also handle 4K video at 60 frames per second and supports H.265 and VP9 video formats. However, the S905L does not support digital TV tuners, so it is only for internet streaming. It usually has no HDR support or only very basic HDR. This chip is common in cheap TV boxes that only need to play video from apps like YouTube or Netflix.

S905X4: A Modern Chip for 4K Streaming with AV1

The S905X4 is a newer and more powerful chip. It uses a 4-core ARM Cortex-A55 CPU, which is faster and uses less power than the older A53 cores. The GPU is upgraded to a Mali-G31 MP2, which gives better graphics performance. The S905X4 can decode 4K video at 60 frames per second and supports H.265, VP9, and AV1 video formats. AV1 is a newer format that helps save bandwidth while keeping high video quality. This chip also supports HDR10, HLG, and sometimes Dolby Vision, so it can give a better picture on TVs that support these features. The S905X4 is used in mid-range TV boxes that aim to offer smooth 4K playback and modern video support.

S905X5: A High-End Chip for Smart TVs with AI Features

The S905X5 is one of Amlogic’s latest chips. It is made for high-end smart TVs and TV boxes. This chip uses newer ARM Cortex-A510 CPU cores, which are faster and more efficient than the A55 cores. The graphics are also better, with a GPU like Mali-G57. One of the main new features of the S905X5 is that it has an NPU (Neural Processing Unit), which can handle AI tasks like voice commands or image recognition. It supports all modern video formats including H.265, VP9, and AV1, and works with HDR10+, HLG, and Dolby Vision for better color and contrast. The S905X5 is designed for devices that want to offer AI features, better picture quality, and be ready for future streaming standards.

Comparison Summary

The S905D is best for boxes that combine live TV and streaming. The S905L is for basic and cheap streaming devices. The S905X4 is good for modern streaming with 4K and AV1 support. The S905X5 is for high-end devices that want AI features and advanced video quality. Each chip fits a different type of product depending on what the device needs to do.
